Diqing (Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture) is located in the northwest of Yunnan, at the border between Yunnan, Sichuan and Tibet. The term Shangri-la firstly appeared in the James Hilton’s book, The Lost Horizon, published in 1933. In Tibetan, Shangri-la means a place where the sun and the moon come across. The major inhabitants here are Tibetan. Similar to Tibet, Zhongdian is a quiet and peaceful place. Located at about 50km west of Lijiang, Jinsha River, the upper reach of the Yangtze River, flow southwards along the Hengduan Range, and is suddenly forced to turn to north as a result of alpine movements, which caused changes in the earth’s physiognomy. When the river reaches the town of Stone-Drum (Shigu), it makes an abrupt turn and flows further northeastwards, forming the marvellous view reputed as the First Bend of the Yangtze.

Tiger Leaping Gorge

From Lijiang’s Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in the east, to Zhongdian’s Haba Snow Mountain in the west, Tiger Leaping Gorge is the longest, deepest, and narrowest gorge. The Gorge acquired its name because, according to local legend, a tiger once leaped over its rapid current.
